Students in Year 12 Design & Technology have finished building their scale chairs. For this project, the students had to research a number of iconic chairs, such as the Barcelona chair by Ludwig Mies van ver Rohe, the Hill House chair by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Spun Chair by Thomas Heatherwick, or even the Ghost chair by Philippe Starck. This work explored the place of designers in the timeline of design and the development of manufacturing techniques and materials, as well as developing the students' design skills. The research was conducted online, as well as through a visit to the chair collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Pupils were required to make a 1:5 scale model of the chair they selected, thinking about the restrictions that working at scale would impose. Below are the chairs that this class produced, arranged next to a 30cm ruler to demonstrate their size.
