Marylebone Academy’s co-educational future

“I am delighted to have been appointed Principal as the school starts a new chapter towards co-education. The decision to welcome girls allows the school to offer academic excellence to everyone in our community. From my time visiting, I can already see the school has a diverse and inclusive community, and by extending to co-education, we will better prepare our students for a fulfilling and successful life beyond school. Our commitment is to education with character and ensuring that all students develop socially and academically. Marylebone Academy will be the school where every student is known, valued and supported to succeed.”
Mr Thomas, Principal from 1 September 2026
Earlier in the year, we announced we had joined United Learning, the largest multi-academy trust in England. In March 2026, we announced that the school would become a co-educational school.
From September 2027, we are excited to become a school for girls and boys and look forward to welcoming our first co-educational Year 7 intake. This move follows the success of our co-educational sixth form welcoming girls in 2019 and will further enrich our school community. Our new Principal, Mr Thomas, has led both co-educational and single sex-schools, so brings a wealth of experience that will help guide and support this exciting transition.
Timeline to co-education
The transition to co-education will be phased to ensure the seamless and deliberately planned introduction of co-education, while supporting every student and family throughout the process.

Joining Marylebone Academy in 2027
All students joining Marylebone Academy, our new name from 1 September 2026, will benefit from carefully planned support to help them settle into school life. We will hold a series of transitional events once your child has been accepted a place to help them thrive in senior school.
To support students in settling into life at Marylebone Academy, from September 2027 our Year 7 cohort will have a dedicated floor during form periods and for pastoral support, ensuring students know where to find support if necessary. We will use our dry gym at breaks with a dedicated trolley for snacks, and with staggered lunch breaks already in place, they will spend most of their time with Key Stage 3 students.
For girls joining the school in 2027, we will have nominated female sixth form mentors, so your daughter has a familiar face within the school and can quickly settle into life at Marylebone Academy.
We already offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities, spanning STEM, sport, creative arts and music. As we transition to co-education, our provision will be fully inclusive and engaging for girls.
Marylebone Academy will provide an ambitious and expertly designed curriculum in line with the United Learning model to ensure our girls are well-educated and able to achieve the highest possible outcomes.
Female PE staff will be in place to ensure a rich and motivating experience in sport for girls. Our Head of PE will be developing our sports programme to include netball while maintaining equal access to established sports such as football, basketball and athletics. We will continue to use Regent’s Park for sports, enabling a wide range of opportunities to support our broadening PE programme.
Our PSHCE programme will be led by fully trained staff to cover teaching on consent, boundaries and personal safety, body image and confidence, and healthy relationships, helping students to build confidence, resilience and respect for themselves and others.
Preparing our staff and students
We already benefit from having a 50:50 ratio of male to female staff at the school, which we will continue to maintain. Many of our teaching staff have vast experience of co-educational settings and are used to teaching girls and boys to the highest standards in mixed classes. Our students come from co-educational primary schools, and this exciting move means that we will be able to welcome siblings to the school and provide consistently high-quality education for our families.
Boys will cover topics such as misogyny, sexual harassment, consent, and zero tolerance on sexist language in PSHCE lessons to ensure high expectations and non-negotiable standards for a respectful, inclusive and safe school environment.
Our school building and facilities
Since moving into our purpose-built school in 2018 and adding our Sixth Form in 2021, we have invested in state-of-the-art facilities that can comfortably accommodate 800 students across both sites, ensuring there is ample space for both boys and girls. Our building will undergo further development to ensure a welcoming and fully inclusive setting for girls.
To ensure a safe and fully inclusive environment for our girls, we will have:
- Dedicated girls’ toilets with sanitary disposal units
- Dedicated girls’ changing rooms
- Updated signage across the school

Applications for girls and boys entering Year 7 in 2027 open via Westminster City Council’s e-admissions portal, regardless of where you live, on 1 September 2026 and close on 31 October 2026. Families are invited to come to our Open Evening on Thursday 1 October 2026 from 5:00pm and our two Open Mornings on Tuesday 6 October and Thursday 8 October from 9:00am. We strongly recommend that you bring your child to these events to give them first-hand insight into life at Marylebone Academy.
You can register your interest to attend one of our Open Events in advance and we will contact you with more information closer to the time. Please register your details here.
